Preserved Egyptian Mummies

It is due to the amazingly preserved Egyptian mummies that archeologist have discovered that science has learned so much about the ancient Egyptian people and how they lived. It has taught us about why the Egyptians preserved their deceased and how exactly it was done.

It was believed by the Ancient Egyptian people that for a successful journey into the afterlife it required both the spirit and the physical body. To insure this happened they went to great detail in preparing the body to ensure it stayed intact and placed earthy possessions with the body to be used in the afterlife.

Having a body preserved was strictly reserved for Kings, Queens and the rich, definitely was not a practice for the common folk. However, they did seem to hold pets in high regard because mummified animals have been found with the other possessions.

The mummification process took quite a long time – anywhere from two to six months.

The process began with carefully removing the internal organs except the heart. The reason for this was the Ancient Egyptians believed the heart contained both spirit and senses, and was needed when it came time for judgment in the Underworld.

After the removal of the other internal organs – the lungs, liver, stomach, and intestine – would be cleaned then placed into special preserving containers called canopic jars.

The canopis jars were usually ornately decorated with unusual lids in the shape of an animal head. The animal head represented the god that was responsible for protecting that particular internal organ. The jars would then be carefully placed in the burial chamber, along with the mummy.

After the brain was also removed from the decease the important drying process of the body would begin. Without this, the body would decompose. The drying agent used for preserving is called natron. These salts were found in the Nile Valley. When the drying procedure was finished the salts were removed and the dried body was wrapped in yards of linen and resin.

It wasn’t unusual for the mummified body to be dressed in clothing, jewelry and masks, and surrounded by everything deemed necessary for its afterlife. Today, you won’t find mummies in their tombs. They have been excavated and are in museums around the world.
